Really proud to share this project as it has been months in the making!
BBC News asked for a warmer, less "clinical" feel for the Six and Ten bulletins.
Taking inspiration from my previous mezzanine designs from elections, and using 3D models that were created from photographic and scanned references of London Broadcasting House office furniture, a virtual newsroom was created in 3D using a LiDAR scan of Studio B as a base, to give the sense of depth, space and vibrance that a live newsroom has.
This was also a good chance to incorporate some of the newer brands such as BBC Verify, along with the accompanying colour tones.
A greenscreen shoot was also organised, filming design staff walking, sitting down, talking in groups etc to create a library of clips that could populate and give live to the newsroom.
These new virtual elements and clips were combined alongside existing real footage of the actual newsroom to retain a sense of realism and familiarity across the design, whilst also extending the newsroom and allowing for control over the art direction.
Lastly a refreshed graphic design element was added, drawing inspiration from both the previous design, but also newer elements such as the BBC chameleon ambients and a frosted glass effect containing the show's numeral.
The final result gave the Six and Ten a more vibrant, premium feel and makes both shows distinct using subtle colour variations.
Such a fun project to work on, so a big thanks to Media Operations (Erron Gordon, Chris Cook) and News Design (Sue Vago, Matt Boulton) for trusting me with this.
